"OF MOUNTAINS, LAKES AND TREES, a very large work, features a different solo trombone voice with orchestra in each of its first three movements. Of Mountains, the first movement, features the solo voice of the bass trombone. Lakes, the second movement, presents the solo tenor trombone. The third movement, Trees, features the alto trombone. The final movement, the Epilogue, features a return to the bass trombone voice.
Written between Spring 1996 and Fall 1997, the work was originally inspired during a conversation between the composer and Charles Vernon, bass trombonist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Bolter, knowing of Mr. Vernon's mastery of the 'whole trombone family,' wondered how this amazing talent might be brought to light and life. Since the composer finds the natural worlds most inspiring and evocative for his own creative process, he asked Mr. Vernon, 'What inspires you?' Mr. Vernon's response was, 'Mountains, lakes and trees.' This response sparked the genesis of the trombone concerto, OF MOUNTAINS, LAKES AND TREES."
