TEMPTATION, for serpent and string quartet (two violins, viola and cello), was written in 1998. The story behind this piece is best told in the composer's own words:

"In winter 1997, while walking one day with Douglas Yeo..., Doug said to me, 'I really love serpent!' At that moment, caught by the purity and genuineness of his sentiment, I was inspired to write a serpent piece for him. Not long after that, the title came to me, 'Temptation.' It was clear... that it would be based in the story of Adam and Eve from the Book of Genesis...." - Norman Bolter

Very simply, the piece opens giving expression to the harmony of nature with all its many forms of life, including humans. Joyful, innocent and natural, this scene gradually metamorphosizes as the serpent (played by the serpent instrument) surreptitiously makes its way inside this peaceful landscape by cleverly creating the illusion that it too is a part of this setting.
