For Ronald Barron

"Sky Dreams was written in late December 2003 and early January 2004 for the composer's long-time Boston Symphony Orchestra colleague, Ronald Barron. Inspired by a late Autumn sunset, the Sky Dreams begin at 3:45 PM in the afternoon and end near 6:00 PM. During this time, in New Englandps late Autumn, the sky can be a rich blue hue, with clouds displaying breathtaking color changes as the sun proceeds to set.... In Sky Dreams, the piano represents the sky and the alto trombone represents the human response to witnessing the sky in the midst of such a sunset....
Sky Dreams is a lot of music condensed into a relatively short period or time, seven or so minutes. During this time, the alto trombone is used in a very lyrical role with large dynamic contrasts...."
